Sovereignty begins with a simple question: Who gets to decide?

For most of our lives, money has existed inside systems controlled by others. Someone sets the rules, someone can change them, and someone ultimately decides what your money can and cannot do.

Bitcoin introduced something radically different: rules instead of rulers.

That idea became BITCOIN IS SOVEREIGN. The figure in the artwork stands between worlds. Behind him are the structures and systems we inherited. Ahead lies an open landscape — uncertain and imperfect, but his to enter. Because sovereignty is not someone promising you freedom. It is taking responsibility for it yourself.

The story of this artwork eventually travelled beyond the artwork itself. It became the cover of Einundzwanzig Magazine Issue 5 — “Bitcoin ist Souverän”, connecting the piece to Bitcoin education, ideas and culture throughout the German-speaking Bitcoin community.

What began as an original mx12Art became a magazine cover, a physical publication and a piece of Bitcoin cultural history. The accompanying photographs document that journey — from the artwork itself to the printed issue and its place alongside the magazine covers that came before it.

And because an artwork about Bitcoin sovereignty should be able to carry more than the idea itself, this piece is loadable with Bitcoin.

The artwork can hold the very thing it speaks about — because sovereignty should not only be something we talk about. It should be something we can hold.
